Disc Brake Hub Guide

Overview

MTB is no longer the sole dominion for disc brake hubs. Today, we are witnessing a road and cyclocross disc brake revolution and for good reason. Disc brakes provides superior performance over rim brakes especially in foul weather. With revolution comes innovation, and sometimes confusion. New and different frame spacing standards across manufactures have challenged riders who are looking to customize their wheels. To address this changing landscape, we have put together this road disc brake hub guide to present the "need-to-know" information to help you make an educated decision about your next custom road disc brake wheelset. We hope you find this information valuable, and of course, if you have questions, or would like to have one of our experts guide you, please feel free to contact us.

Specialized SCS

Specialized road disc brake bikes with the "SCS" Short Chainstay System design, such as the Diverge, Crux, Roubaix, and Ruby feature a unique rear frame spacing that is not compatible with standard 135x12 or 142x12 through axle configurations. This "innovation" poses a challenge to riders looking to customize their wheels. If you want to build custom wheels for your SCS bike, your options are as follows:

  • Build a custom wheel with the Hope SP24 SCS Straight Pull ISO rear hub. The hope hub is specifically designed to work with SCS bikes.
  • Use a non-SCS derailleur hanger, available from your local Specialized dealer.
